THE CHIESA DI SANTA LUCIA (CHURCH OF ST. LUCY), Vic. Podestà - Treviso |
|
The Church of St. Lucy was built about in 1350, where once there were
the jails of Treviso after their destruction due to a burning. The indoor appearance of this small Church
is very similar to that of a crypt with a low ceiling where there are the 3 cross vaults leaning on 6
columns and the lack of light. |

|
In 1388 Venice got the control over Treviso with
the flight of noble family of the Carraresi, this event was welcome for Trevisans; so in 1389 the Chiesa di Santa Lucia (Church
of St. Lucy) was enlarged because in it the St. Lucy’s worship was to be celebrated. The orientation
of its axis was modified also with this renovation. It seems the apse of the old Church is the chapel of
the Church today and we may see it when we are entering, we may see the frescoes representing
"Storie della passione" (Tales of the Passion) specially. |
|
|
On the right wall, in the middle, there is
the "Madonna del pavegio" (Madonna with butterfly) made about in 1350 by Tomaso da Modena; it was
on another wall and then it was moved from another wall of the same church. The "Madonna con pavegio"
represents the Madonna with child while he is following the fly of the butterfly, called "pavegio",
with his hand. |
|
|
It is possible to see another picture of the "Madonna con pavegio"
on the background wall with a beautiful bas-relief. The walls and the vaults of 3 background spans of the Church
of St. Lucy are frescoed by representations of tales of Saints (St. Giovanni, St. Cristoforo) excellently;
the frescoes were made at the end of 14th century. |
|
The Chiesa di Santa Lucia (Church of St. Lucy) is
so near the Chiesa di San Vito (Church of St. Vito) thus the two churches are divided from a wall only; it is possible to go from a church to other across a small door. |
