THE PESCHERIA, Treviso old centre. |
|
The Pescheria (Fish Market) of Treviso
is situated in one of the most characteristic places in the old
centre, it is surrounded on one hand by buildings as Ca’
dei Carraresi and Ca’ Brittoni, on the other hand by buildings which made up
the Camaldolese Nuns’ Convent. |

The river
Cagnan seen from Treviso sixteenth-century Walls is painted in a picture
by Medoro Coghetto, there is a wide wheel on the right side in
it; this wheel had to take the water from the river to the Piazza
Monte di Pietà ( Pawnshop Square ) to clean the square after
the Fish Market was taken place.
There wasn’t the present Pescheria
(Fish Market) island till half of 19th century in Treviso, there
were only three small natural islands which were divided by the
branches of the river Cagnan.
The Treviso mayor ordered the relocation
of the fish market from Piazza Monte di Pietà (where it
happened from several centuries) to the island of the Pescheria
in that period, under the Austrian role. |
|
|
When the fish market was taking place in
Piazza Monte di Pietà ( Pawnshop Square ), the respective
stores were located in the interior of Buranelli portico. The fish
pedlars often came from Burano, the island of the Venice lagoon;
thus this fact explains from where the word "Buranelli" comes. |

When the fish market was took away
from Piazza Monte di Pietà, the vegetable market began there and then the mushrooms market took the place till some year
ago (we may see it now in Piazza San Vito - St.
Vito Square during autumn every year).
The working plan of the Pescheria new island, as
appointed place to fish sale, was made by the Municipal engineer
Bomben. |

View of the Pescheria - Fish Market below, the late works readapted the banks, the horse-chestnuts and the old fish stalls. |
|
Some filling
earth was taken to join the small natural islands and thus
one wider island was made, it had the shape of an ellipse which
was perfectly symmetric and it was linked to the land by one present
bridge, it is near Muscoli’s public house today. The plan proposed
the making also of a metallic stall in the centre island,
but it was never built. The building of a cold store had become
possible about 1929, but also this idea soon waned. |
|
|
A new upgrading plan was proposed in the 1950s.
The Fondazione Cassamarca worked out a development project of this area, but it wasn’t taken
into consideration by the Municipality which decided to develop
a new plan by the help of the architect Toni Follina. |
|
- He regained the original paving by trachyte stone and he changed a
little the island shape in the end below (the banks are raised
more today), all these things have to remind the idea of a ship.
|
|
- This architect replaced the old horse-chestnuts which were
sick.
