CASA DEI CARRARESI, Via Palestro, 33/35 - Treviso |
|
The current structure of Casa dei Carraresi (Carraresi’s House) was called
"Osteria alla Croce" at the end of 15th century.
The finding of historical documents regarding the House enabled to establish the Osteria alla Croce found its
seat within the today’s Casa dei Carraresi; this was born to give a public service to refresh and to lodge
the travellers who were coming to Treviso from Austria and Germany. |
|
The name " Ca’ dei Carraresi " would arise from Carraresi’s blazon affixed on main façade in Middle Ages to indicate that the " Hospicium " had been allocated
as seat of officials and soldiers being in noble family’s pay. The Carraresi requisitioned the building
probably for a time. The use of this building as residence in Treviso is only a supposition. |

|
Then there is Casa Brittoni, close to Ca’ dei
Carraresi; it is less known than the first probably, but it is richer in frescoes which have attained to us.
In 1396 this building was bought by Giovanni Bertoni, who was the manager of Osteria alla Croce. |

Some restorations concerned this complex between
1396 and 1397 particularly: the wooden pillars sinking into the river Cagnan were replaced by others made
by bricks and the building of a terrace (podilium) by bricks, which took the place of pre-existent by wood.
There was another restoration after some year, in the beginning of 15th century following new licence of
Podestà in Treviso. |
|
|
|
This new licence allowed to replace the old wooden
columns located along the "calesella" with other by bricks on condition that the new pillars didn’t trespass
on public property and that the porticoes were open to the free passing of the citizens. |

Carraresi's blazon, fresco located on the main facade along Via Palestro |
|
|
Casa dei Carraresi appears us today as an impressive
Romanesque building made by rough bricks; the main façade (along Via Palestro) is typified by an arcade with
five round arches leaning on stone columns and the halls of the ground floor receive the outside light from them. |
|
It is possible to see a series of double lancet windows
and triple lancet windows on the main façade (always along the side of Via Palestro), these windows are placed
symmetrically and the blazon of Da Carrara was restored. The opposite façade of this building is overlooking
Pescheria (the Fish Market), the terrace on the river Cagnan, flowing beneath the building partly, leans against
five pillars and it is overflowed by as many arches closed by glass wall. |
|
Casa Brittoni has its entrance on Vicolo
Spineda and it is an one body with Casa dei Carraresi; we may see still several beautiful medieval frescoes
within it. The most interesting, among these, are: a "Madonna con bambino" dating back to the first
decades of 15th century, a decoration made by a false upholstery and the "Incontro tra un poeta ed
un cavaliere" with a landscape on the back, works made in 16th century. |
