THE LOGGIA DEI CAVALIERI (KNIGHTS' LOGGIA),
Via Martiri della Libertà - Treviso |
|
The Loggia dei Cavalieri (Knights' Loggia) was raised in the second
half of 13th century, when Andrea da Perugia was Podestà in Treviso. It is a brick building having
a square plan and a roof with four pitches covered in tiles. |
|
Three sides of Loggia dei Cavalieri show
five round arches for every side leaning on pillars and capitals by Istrian stone; the inside middle
space is characterized by a thick column by violet granite partly, it bears largely the weight of
the ceiling.
The arches of the three sides were closed till the first half of 20th century, in the history of the
Loggia dei Cavalieri (the one side, appearing at the street, has the open arches). |

The nobles met to take part only in parlour games
here in fine weather in this building.
The use of the Loggia wasn't always the same in the history: its purpose ended on 13th December, 1388 when
the town was taken by Venice.
This building was more and more in a state of decay after this date and thus a house was raised indoors the
Loggia around 1550. It was used as timber yard in the centuries and over a hundred barrels were stored
there in 17th century; it became a depository and a retail shop of coffins in the second half of 19th
century. |
|
Its states were so decayed the possibility to
demolish it was loomed ahead on several occasions, these projects were thwarted by the abbot Luigi Bailo's
intervention; he was one of the most important admirer and curator of the heritage of Treviso.
- In 1889 the Loggia dei Cavalieri was given up to Municipality.
- It was restored by the Municipality between 1910 and 1911.
- The Municipality decided to pull down two buildings leaning against two of the three sides of the
Loggia in 1922. |

Its inside space was used as place where there
were a small market of second-hand books and stall of toys around the half of sixties, before the last
restoration; thus it became a point of reference for the citizens interested at these goods.
