OLD MONUMENTS IN TREVISO: PALAZZO DEI TRECENTO |
|
A big bomb, dropped just over the centre
of the hall, knocked down the roof on April 7, 1944; the blast and
the pressure wave caused the collapse of wide zones of the walls,
included the side facing to Piazza Indipendenza.
When we see the façade of the Palace from this square, we notice the
mark of the collapsed zone which was rebuilt. |
|
The zone of stayed up wall
leaned out toward outside more than one metre and thus it was declared
past redemption; the idea of demolishing the whole building was considered
too. |

 |
Forlati, the supervisor, passing off some surviving frescoes
as works by Paolo Veronese, avoided the demolition and promoted
the restoration putting straight the walls thanks to a system
of tie beams and counterpoises.
The wide hall has a ceiling supported by several timber trusses
internally and the four walls are frescoed.
A frescoed frieze is visible on the three sides of the hall:
the blazons, the names and the year of election of the Podestà
are portrayed in it. Those Podestà managed the town
in 14th century and 15 century. |

 |
On the left: a fresco
made at the end of 16th century, it is showing a scrolls blazon
with a eagle. The image of the Justice overhangs it and some
cartouches with writings alluding to Justice surrounds it. |

The frescoed frieze with
the names of the Podestà who ruled Treviso and
in the centre the winged lion symbol of the Venice influence
over the town. |

The wall on the back is the richest
in decorations, it has a Madonna with her child and the saints Liberale
and Paolo in the central area. Four female figures symbolizing the
four cardinal virtues are located next to the three windows; these
frescoes were made almost surely in the second half of 16th century. |

Two female figures, located over side windows,
are holding up the blazons of Treviso. |

iThe interior frescoes of Palazzo dei Trecento in Treviso were repaired and cleaned by signs of the time in 2007; this work was possible thanks to private sponsors. |
