PORTA ALTINIA - Treviso
     

The façade, turned to Treviso, was simply plastered and painted. There are no more the frescoes by Pompeo Amalteo, because they were damaged by several historical events, which dragged in the Door.

When a wide gate on the Walls was made a little further East, the Porta Altinia lost its strategic and road importance and thus when the old nineteenth-century bridge (connecting Treviso to outside) over the river Sile collapsed it was built no more.

The present wooden bridge was raised some decades ago when Porta Altinia (Altinia Gates) was restored to be used again as crossing.

Porta Altinia was erected sheltered by St. Marco Castle, which was connected to it by an indoor stair, this Door worked for the town defence also thanks to a drawbridge turning to the outside moat.

When the Venetian Republic was exerting its influence on Treviso, a building was built in the square opposite the Door; it worked as garrison of cavalry and infantry detachment.
   
In the history the restorations followed one another to cope with the wear and tear of time and with the damage caused by the Second World War airstrikes and they brought back the old Porta Altinia to its original look by a precise work of science renewal.
