FOLK TRADITIONS OF VENETO - ITALY: TRIAL AGAINST OLD WOMAN IN TREVISO |

| Among the folk traditions of Veneto - Italy the trial against the old woman
(processo alla vecia) in Treviso and in its province is a trial of puppet having looks of an old woman;
this folk tradition of Veneto has distant origins which are linked up with Veneto traditions of Panevin,
the traditional bonfires in the north-east of Italy during winter solstice. |

Panevin in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia often have on the top the old
woman who was condemned to the stake.
The first news about this tradition in Treviso: the bonfires of the
old woman date back to the end of 19th century when the trial against the old woman was happening in Piazza
Esperia, in old centre of Treviso.
An incision was made on her stomach and the sweets were going out from it
before being set on fire. |

| The trial against the old woman was resumed in the fifties, the event took place in Piazza
Giustinian in that period. In the last years some folk traditions of Veneto are disappearing, but Folk Group of Treviso succeeded in getting a higher number of spectators interested only in the sixties up until today. |

The trial against the old woman had had taken place in Lungo Sile
Mattei since; it was moved to Piazza del Grano, which is current seat of weekly open-air market.
The bonfire against old woman in Treviso has been held for more thirty years near Ponte Dante.
The old woman, hung over water of river Sile, was waiting for its doom here, it will be set fire to by
scuba divers who are running down the river with torches. |

The tradition of Treviso provides for the Folk Group of Treviso's show with its typical dances and songs and then trial against
the old woman will happen. The lawsuit, attended by a judge, a counsel for the defence and Public Prosecutor,
will go on with a comic and farce slan |

| The accused is guilty of being the cause of Treviso
misfortunes, sorrows of daily life and troubles in the last year in trial against the old woman.
The death sentence is already written: the puppet is condemned to the stake sentence over the river

The trial against the old woman takes place also in Villorba, at the country called San Sisto; it is a country situated few kilometres north of Treviso. The event is organized by U.S. San Sisto group who is the one keeping alive the tradition in this district.
The trial will be held inside a marquee and a buffet with carnival sweets from Treviso will be given to those present at the end. Free admission. |

| There is a similar event in province of Trento, Italy too: in Levico Terme and in San Martino
di Castrozza where the old woman is going to the stake on December 31. |
